Running Title: A survey on texture-based visualization methods. ABSTRACT Visualization of vector data produced from application areas such as computational uid dynamics (CFD), environmental sciences , and material engineering is a challenging task. Traditional visualization approaches, such as vector plot, particle tracing, stream surfaces, volume rendering, and so on, often provide a rather coarse spatial resolution. This problem is tackled by texture-based algorithms, which can provide the ow visualization by high resolution output texture. Texture-based methods reveal to be eeective, versatile , and suitable for a large spectrum of application. In this paper we review, outlining advantages and drawbacks, the most important texture-based techniques known in the literature for: 2D and 3D, steady and unsteady, regular and curvilinear vector grids.

Interactive Animation of Volume Line Integral Convolution Based on 3D Texture Mapping
Line integral convolution (LIC) is an eeective technique for visualizing vector elds. The application of LIC to 3D ow elds has yet been limited by diiculties to eeciently display and animate the resulting 3D images. Texture-based volume rendering allows interactive visualization and manipulation of 3D LIC textures. In this context, we suggest two related approaches for animating static 3D ow el...

Many interesting phenomena in molecular systems like interactions between macro-molecules, protein-substrate docking, or channeling processes in membranes are gouverned to a high degree by classical Coulomb or van-der-Waals forces. The visualization of these force elds is important for verifying numerical simulations. Moreover, by inspecting the forces visually we can gain deeper insight into t...
متن کاملVector Plots for Irregular Grids
A standard method for visualizing vector elds consists of drawing many small \glyphs" to represent the eld. This paper extends the technique from regular to curvilinear and unstructured grids. In order to achieve a uniform density of vector glyphs on nonuniformly spaced grids, the paper describes two approaches to resampling the grid data. One of the methods, an element-based resampling, can be...
متن کاملAnimating Flowwelds: Rendering of Oriented Line Integral Convolution
Line Integral Convolution (LIC) is a common approach for the visualization of vector elds. It is well suited for visualizing the direction of a ow eld, but it gives no information about the orientation of the underlying vectors. We introduce Oriented Line Integral Convolution (OLIC), where direction as well as orientation are encoded within the resulting image. This is achieved by using a low f...

Interactive texture-based flow visualization has become an active field of research in the last three or four years. Recent progress in this field has led to efficient vector field visualization methods and, in particular, to improved techniques for time-dependent data. This tutorial covers approaches for vector fields given on 2D planes, on surfaces, and within 3D volumes. Both the theoretical...
